WASHINGTON -- Pfizer Inc. said Monday that it will pay the Food and Drug Administration $1.3 billion for its illegal anti-impotence drug Viagra to settle lawsuits filed by a state lawyer who has alleged the company failed to warn consumers about a dangerous side effect of sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra.
The suit, filed in the Western District of New York, includes allegations that Pfizer failed to warn patients about a possible serious side effect of sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra, the U. S. Food and Drug Administration said.
"In some instances, Pfizer failed to warn consumers about the risks associated with sildenafil," said Thomas F. Miller, a Pfizer spokesman.
The complaint alleged that Pfizer failed to disclose that sildenafil and other prescription drugs interact with nitrates found in some prescription drugs, including nitroglycerin, the drug that is used to treat chest pain and angina. It also failed to warn consumers about the possibility of side effects including headache, dizziness and abnormal heart rhythms.

Pfizer is now the only drugmaker in the world that does not list prices for erectile dysfunction drugs on its drug supply list.

He said he would not comment on the settlement but said his bill would be limited to the state and federal government.
"The issue is not that Pfizer's actions are wrong; it is that it acted responsibly in the way that it acted in the FDA and the states," he said.
"In this case, it's not a mistake to take the drug companies out of the equation."
Kerry also said that he would not comment on whether the company would pay for a settlement.
The lawsuit alleges that Pfizer failed to disclose the risks of sildenafil and other prescription drugs with nitrates.
The drugmaker denied that its drugs contained nitrates. "We are unable to comment on the extent of the settlement and will not comment on the settlement," the company said in a statement.
In the lawsuit, Pfizer contends that the manufacturer failed to adequately warn consumers of the risk of adverse side effects of sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra, the U.
In one of the cases filed in the state court, a federal judge ruled that "the FDA did not adequately warn the public about the potential risks of sildenafil, and in any event, the drug was still under review" in its approval process for Viagra.
The federal court also rejected Pfizer's allegations that the drug maker failed to provide adequate warning of the risks associated with sildenafil.
